New Year, New Skills, New Opportunities

Happy New Year! May 2013 be full of new opportunities for you to grow and develop both personally and professionally. May you travel to new places, build new relationships and develop new skills.
As the year finished and 2013 began I’ve been working with a number of people whose companies are sending them on global assignments. For them, new places and new relationships will be a reality everyday as they hit the ground running in their new locations.
Critical to their success will be the cultural intelligence we focused on in training. The CQ Drive that keeps them motivated to work through the cultural challenges; the CQ Knowledge remembered from training and learnt each day to enable them to manage well or build relationships successfully. And most important is CQ Strategy – the metacognitive component. This component gives them the ability to think about what they are thinking, to recognize the assumptions they may be making and adjust their thinking and then their behavior (CQ Action).
Each of these components has been shown to be critical in some part of the expat adjustment and performance cycle. And yes we can measure CQ! The Cultural Intelligence Assessments can assist with selection identifying those candidates who are higher in CQ and therefore more likely to succeed and target cross cultural training and coaching to the needs of the expat.
The good news is CQ can be increased, so you (or your expats) can grow and develop! And that will definitely lead to new relationships and new opportunities.
